Statler
Upper East Side, Manhattan
Project by Nelson Byrd Woltz Landscape Architects.
Statler is a 5 story townhouse on the upper east side of Manhattan, NYC. Working with Olson Kundig Architects, the courtyards and terraces were imagined as a place of respite in an otherwise chaotic city: an abstraction of a quiet, sheltered ravine in a deep forest. An outdoor kitchen and dining room in the ground floor courtyard provide the stage for entertainment. The space is dissected by a stone font and water rill that flows over a skylight to the basement, providing white noise and movement. The roof terrace supports the ghostly and animated forms of birch trees in raised planters that can be seen through the skylight at the top of the central spiral stair from the ground floor. Productive gardens provide a place for the family to get their hands dirty and reinforce the connection between plants and quality local food.
Paul joined the project in the concept design phase and took it through detailed design and construction documents to completion.
